US immigrant population on track to reach record highs this decade
Por
Washington, D.C., November 26, 2002 (AFP) - More than three million immigrants poured into the United States over the past two years and at the current pace the immigrant population would hit a record high by the end of the decade, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).
The total number of immigrants resident in the United States now exceeds 33 million or 11 percent of the general population -- the highest percentage in 70 years -- according to the Washington-based think-tank which supports stricter government curbs on immigration.
If the human influx continues at the current rate, the immigrant share of the total population will surpass the all time high of 14.8 percent reached in 1890 by the end of the decade, the Center said.
The newcomers account for at least half the population growth in the states of Texas, Florida, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, Virginia, and Oregon, and virtually all of the demographic growth in California and Maryland in the period covered by the survey: January 2000 to March 2002.
If the United States continues to embrace immigrants at the rate of 1.5 million a year, the influx could create "enormous challenges for the nation's schools, health care system, and physical infrastructure," the report said.
According to the CIS, half of post-1970 immigrants and their U.S.-born children live in or near poverty and one-third have no health insurance and that lower socio-economic status poses a major risk to the government's ability to pay welfare benefits to the existing U.S. population among other considerations.
"If there is no change in immigration policy, it is almost certain that at least 15 million new documented and undocumented immigrants will settle in the United States in this decade alone," they said, arguing that "adding large numbers of people with substantially lower life-time earnings could significantly weaken the Social Society system in the long-run."
The newcomers, defined as undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents and naturalized citizens who were born outside of the United States come primarily from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and East Asia, the researchers said. AFP

If the United States continues to embrace immigrants at the rate of 1.5 million a year,I ain't embracing nothing.
the influx could create "enormous challenges for the nation's schools, health care system, and physical infrastructure," the report said.
The "enormous challenge" already is here.

It seems that the news media has adopted the word "immigrant" to signify both legal immigrants and illegal aliens.

The Dream Act (S.1291) is a Nightmare The disgraceful "Dream Act" is a product of that stealth RINO Orrin Hatch. He is totally untrustworthy. It is long past time for him to go.
This legislation reminds me of the act of treason which started all of our problems to begin with...the 1965 Immigration Act pushed through by that low-life traitor Robert Kennedy, who is for some stupid reason idolized by Bill O'Reilly.

I sometimes think the '65 INA was some kind of act of revenge by Ted K.
Kill my brother? I kill the country.

Corrected title: "US [Democrat] population on track to reach record highs this decade."
The Republican party will either move further left or die.

The World Trade Center was bombed twice by "immigrants" - here "legally" or "illegally." The INS still can't account for who it did and did not let into this country "legally" or "illegally."
That Ted Kennedy is still oversees the INS without question, is totally absurd. That our president and congress still allow our borders to be open, and the INS to function while we are at war is at the very least a threat to our national security, as well as despicable.
I guess it is easier for our government to make laws that cripple the airline industry while frisking American taxpayers as they board planes traveling within our own borders, than it is to close our borders and account for the "terrorists" who publically hate us that the INS let in.
It was the hope of a lot of voters that once the Clinton administration was gone, the American taxpayer would no longer be demonized for the world's problems.
Our border patrols should doubled, and our borders should be closed until our war on terrorism is ended, and our soldiers are back safe at home. Punish the terrorists - not the taxpayers.

Vote out the RATS and replace the liberal activist judiciary. It's the only way.

Why are our so-called leaders, hell bent on pouring millions more a year into this country?
